ভূমিকা:
ঊনবিংশ শতকে হিন্দু সমাজে নানা ধরনের কুসংস্কার বিদ্যমান ছিল। এসব কুসংস্কার দূরীকরণে শিক্ষিত বাঙালি মনীষী রাজা রামমোহন রায়ের পরবর্তীতে এগিয়ে আসেন ঈশ্বরচন্দ্র বিদ্যাসাগর। তাঁর সংস্কার কর্মসূচি ছিল মূলত সামাজি কুসংস্কারের বিরুদ্ধে আন্দোলন। তিনি হিন্দু সমাজ থেকে কুসংস্কার, কুপ্রথা ও অজ্ঞতা দূরীকরণ এবং বাল্য ও বহুবিবাহ রোধ, বিধ বিবাহ আইনসিদ্ধ ইত্যাদি ক্ষেত্রে ঈশ্বরচন্দ্র বিদ্যাসাগরের অবদান অপরিসীম।→সমাজসংস্কারে বিদ্যাসাগরের অবদান:
রাজা রামমোহন রায়ের পরবর্তীতে সমাজসংস্কারে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ অবদান রাখেন ঈশ্বরচন্দ্র বিদ্যাসাগর। তাঁর অবদানসমূহ নিম্নে আলোচনা করা হলো :১. বিধবা বিবাহ আইনসিদ্ধ।
ঈশ্বরচন্দ্র বিদ্যাসাগরের সামাজিক সংস্কারের সবচেয়ে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ অংশ বিধবা বিবাহ আইনসিদ্ধকরণে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ অবদান রাখেন। তিনি বিধবা বিবাহ সম্পর্কে জনগণকে সচেতন করার জন্য বিভিন্ন পত্রিকায় প্রবন্ধ রচনা করেন। তিনি ১৮৫৫ সালে সহস্র স্বাক্ষর সম্বলিত বিধবা বিবাহ আইনসিদ্ধ করার জন্য সরকারের নিকট আবেদনপত্র পেশ করেন। শেষ পর্যন্ত তিনি বিধবা বিবাহ আইনসিদ্ধ সক্ষম হয়েছিলেন।
২. বাল্য ও বহুবিবাহের বিরুদ্ধে আন্দোলন:
হিন্দু সমাজে প্রচলিত বাল্য ও বহুবিবাহরোধে ঈশ্বরচন্দ্র বিদ্যাসাগরের ভূমিকা অতুলনীয়। তৎকালীন সময়ে হিন্দু সমাজে পুরুষরা একাধিক কিংবা শতাধিক বিয়ে করতো স্ত্রীর সম্পদের লোভে। আবার যখন-তখন স্ত্রীদেরকে পরিত্যাগ করতো। এ অবস্থা দেশে ঈশ্বরচন্দ্র বিদ্যাসাগর বাল্য ও বহুবিবাহ রোধের জন্য আন্দোলনের সূচনা করেন। অবশেষে হিন্দু সমাজে বাল্য ও বহুবিবাহ কিছুটা হ্রাস পায়।৩. নারী উন্নয়ন :
নারীদের সামাজিক উন্নয়নে ঈশ্বরচন্দ্র বিদ্যাসাগরের অবদান অপরিসীম। তিনি বুঝতে পারেন নারীদের সার্বিক অগ্রগতি ও মঙ্গল সাধনের জন্য নারী শিক্ষার কোনো বিকল্প নেই। এজন্যই তিনি নারী শিক্ষার প্রসারে ব্রতী ছিলেন।
উপসংহার:
সুতরাং উপরের আলোচনা সাপেক্ষে আমরা বলতে পারি যে, হিন্দু সমাজ থেকে কুসংস্কার, কুপ্রথা ও অজ্ঞতা দূরীকরণ এবং বাল্য ও বহুবিবাহ রোধ, বিধবা বিবাহ আইনসিদ্ধ এবং নারীদের সামাজিক উন্নয়নে ঈশ্বরচন্দ্র বিদ্যাসাগরের অবদান অপরিসীম।

Ishwarchandra Vidyasagar came forward after Raja Rammohan Roy, an educated Bengali sage to remove these superstitions. His reform program was mainly a movement against social prejudices. Ishwarchandra Vidyasagar's contribution in eradicating superstitions, bad practices and ignorance from Hindu society and preventing child and polygamy, making polygamy legal etc. is immense.
→ Vidyasagar's contribution to social reform:
Ishwarchandra Vidyasagar made an important contribution to social reform after Raja Rammohan Roy. His contributions are discussed below:
1. Widow marriage is legal.
Ishwarchandra was instrumental in legalizing widow marriage, the most important part of Vidyasagar's social reforms. He wrote articles in various magazines to make people aware about widow marriage. In 1855, he submitted a petition to the government to legalize widow marriage with a thousand signatures. Finally he legalized widow marriage.
2. Movement against child and polygamy:
Ishwarchandra Vidyasagar's role in preventing childhood and polygamy prevalent in Hindu society is unparalleled. At that time in Hindu society, men used to marry more than one or more than a hundred for the sake of the wife's wealth. Sometimes he abandoned his wives. In this situation, Ishwarchandra Vidyasagar started a movement to prevent child and polygamy. Eventually child and polygamy declined somewhat in Hindu society.
3. Women Development:
Ishwarchandra Vidyasagar's contribution to the social development of women is immense. She realizes that there is no substitute for women's education for the overall progress and well-being of women. That is why she was committed to the expansion of women's education.
