উন্নয়নমূলক কর্মকান্ডের মাধ্যমে বর্তমান প্রজন্মের চাহিদা মেটানোর পাশাপাশি সেসব উন্নয়ন কর্মকাণ্ড যাতে ভবিষ্যৎ প্রজন্মের চাহিদা মেটানোর ক্ষেত্রে ঘাটতি বা বাঁধার কোনো কারণ হয়ে না দাঁড়ায়, সেদিকে বিশেষভাবে লক্ষ্য রেখে পরিকল্পিত উন্নয়নই হলো টেকসই উন্নয়ন বা Sustainable Development টেকসই উন্নয়ন মূলত ভবিষ্যৎ প্রজন্মের কথা ভেবে গৃহীত একটি উন্নয়ন পরিকল্পনা। টেকসই উন্নয়ন কেবলমাত্র পরিবেশ সংরক্ষণ এবং অর্থনৈতিক উন্নয়নই নয়; বরং সামাজিক এবং মানবিক উন্নয়নও এর আওতাভুক্ত। ১৯৮৭ সালে জাতিসংঘের Brundtland Commis sion এর 'Our Common Future' প্রতিবেদনে সর্বপ্রথম টেকসই উন্নয়ন বা Sustainable Development ধারণাটিকে সংজ্ঞায়িত করা হয়। জাতিসংঘ ২০০০-২০১৫ সালে ১৫ বছর মেয়াদি টেকসই উন্নয়ন লক্ষ্যমাত্রা গ্রহণ করে, যা সহস্রাব্দের উন্নয়ন লক্ষ্যমাত্রা বা এমডিজি নামে পরিচিত ছিল। এরই ধারাবাহিকতায় ২০১৫ সালে জাতিসংঘ ১৫ বছর মেয়াদি টেকসই উন্নয়ন লক্ষ্যমাত্রা (এসডিজি) হাতে নেয়, যার প্রধান ও একমাত্র উদ্দেশ্য বিশ্বে শান্তি ও সমৃদ্ধি নিশ্চিত করা। সেই লক্ষ্য বাস্তবায়নে ১৭টি উল্লেখযোগ্য ও সময়োপযোগী লক্ষ্যমাত্রা নির্ধারণ করে সংস্থাটি । তবে এসডিজি বাস্তবায়নের ১৬৯টি সুনির্দিষ্ট লক্ষ্যমাত্রা রয়েছে। এসডিজি বাস্তবায়নে জাতিসংঘের সাসটেইনেবল ডেভেলপমেন্ট সলিউশনস নেটওয়ার্ক (এসডিএসএন)-এর ২০২২ সালের প্রকাশিত প্রতিবেদন অনুসারে ১৬৩টি দেশের মধ্যে বাংলাদেশের অবস্থান ১০৪তম – স্কোর ৬৪.২২। অন্যদিকে, ৮৬.৫১ স্কোর নিয়ে এসডিজি বাস্তবায়নে বিশ্বে শীর্ষ দেশ ফিনল্যান্ড। টেকসই উন্নয়ন কি, টেকসই উন্নয়ন কি, টেকসই উন্নয়ন কি,
