What is Green Banking?
The concept of green banking was first developed in Western countries. Green banking activities were officially started in 2003 with the aim of protecting the environment. In March 2009, United States Congressman Chris Van Hollen introduced the Green Bank Act to establish and expand government-owned green banks. After enactment of Green Banking Act, use of paper in primary banking operations. A decision to reduce is taken. Because a lot of trees are used as raw material for paper making. For this reason, green banking is called environment friendly banking system. Bangladesh Bank made the first green banking policy on 27 February 2011. Subsequently, all Scheduled Banks have developed their own Green Banking Policy and Green Banking Unit in 2013 as per the directives of Bangladesh Bank. The first of the two basic methods of practicing green banking is online banking, waste management, solar panels on bank roofs. deployment, use of webcams for video conferencing instead of physical meetings, use of high mileage vehicles, online statements, e-mailing documents etc. The second is the construction of green buildings, financing of green projects, tree planting and various voluntary activities of banks. All public and private banks in Bangladesh have already stepped up funding for green projects as well as internal operations of green banks. Out of 10 thousand 342 branches of the banks, 9251 branches are online based, which is 89.42 percent of the total branches. 3 thousand 226 branches of commercial banks are providing online facilities to customers. At present 212 branches of commercial banks and 150 SME units and ATM booths are fully powered by solar power.
