লিঙ্গ বা জেন্ডার এবং সেক্সের মধ্যে কিছু মৌলিক পার্থক্য রয়েছে। তা নিম্নে দেয়া হলো :
১. সেক্স হলো নারীত্ব ও পুরুষত্বের জৈবিক উপাদান, আর জেন্ডার হলো নারী ও পুরুষের মনস্তাত্ত্বিক, সামাজিক, সাংস্কৃতিক বোধ।
২. সেক্স হলো Biological যা নারীরও আছে পুরুষেরও আছে, এ লিঙ্গ শারীরিক। কিন্তু জেন্ডার শারীরিক কোন অঙ্গ-প্রত্যঙ্গ নয় এরা সামাজিক লিঙ্গ
৩. জেন্ডার বৈশিষ্ট্য একটি নির্দিষ্ট সমাজে সামাজিক ও মনস্তাত্ত্বিকভাবে নির্ধারিত। পক্ষান্তরে, সেক্স শারীরিক বৈশিষ্ট্য সূচিত।
৪. জেন্ডার হলো সামাজিকভাবে গড়ে উঠা নারী-পুরুষের পরিচয় সামাজিকভাবে নির্ধারিত নারী-পুরুষের মধ্যকার সম্পর্ক। সমাজ দ্বারা নারী-পুরুষের ভূমিকা যা পরিবর্তন করা যায়।
পক্ষান্তরে, সেক্স হলো জৈবিক কারণে সৃষ্ট নারী-পুরুষের বৈশিষ্ট্যসূচক ভিন্নতা বা শারীরিক বৈশিষ্ট্যের ভিত্তিতে নারী ও পুরুষের স্বাতন্ত্র্যতা, যা পরিবর্তন করা যায় না।
৫. সেক্স নারী ও পুরুষের জৈবিক পরিচয় বহন করে। আর জেন্ডার নারী ও পুরুষের উপর আরোপিত সামাজিক পরিচয় বহন করে।
৬. সেক্স হলো প্রাকৃতিক, শারীরিক, পূর্বনির্ধারিত এবং অপরিবর্তনীয়। আর জেন্ডার হলো সমাজ কর্তৃক আরোপিত, সমাজ সংস্কৃতিভিত্তিক, আচার-আচরণগত এবং পরিবর্তনীয়।

পরিশেষে বলা যায় যে, যদিও জেন্ডার ও সেক্স উভয়ের অর্থ লিঙ্গ হিসেবে আমাদের কাছে পরিচিত তারপরও তাদের মধ্যে কিছু পার্থক্য রয়েছে। জেন্ডার সামাজিক পরিচয় বহন করে আর সেক্স শারীরিক বা জৈবিক।
