ভূমিকা : ১৭৫৭ সালে পলাশির যুদ্ধে নবাব সিরাজ উদ-দৌলার পরাজয়ের মধ্যে দিয়ে বাংলার মধ্যযুগের অবদান ঘটে। পলাশি যুদ্ধের পর থেকে বাংলার রাজনৈতিক ও সাধারণ জনজীবনে বিরাট পরিবর্তন আসে।
এ সময় ঘন ঘন দুর্ভিক্ষ হতে থাকে, বাংলার সম্পদ ইউরোপে পাচার হতে থাকে এবং সাধারণ মানুষের দুঃখ-দুর্দশা বেড়ে যায়। এসব কারণে বাংলার সামাজিক ও অর্থনৈতিক ভিত্তি প্রায় ভেঙে যায় ।
তাই এ দেশের ধর্মীয় জীবনেও প্রবেশ করতে থাকে নানা কুসংস্কার। এ অবস্থার পরিবর্তন হতে থাকে ঊনবিংশ শতকের প্রথম থেকে। বাংলার সামাজিক ও ধর্মীয় জীবন সংস্কার করতে এগিয়ে আসেন বাঙালি সংস্কারক রাজা রামমোহন রায়।
সমাজসংস্কারে রাজা রামমোহন রায়ের অবদানসমূহ:
যেসব ক্ষেত্রে রাজা রামমোহন রায়ের অবদান রয়েছে সেগুলো নিম্নে আলোচনা করা হলো। যথা:
১. আত্মীয় সভা গঠন :
একেশ্বরবাদের বাণী প্রচারের জন্য ১৮১৫ সালে রামমোহন রায় 'আত্মীয় সভা' নামে সমিতি গঠন করেন। সে যুগের কলকাতার শিক্ষিত অভিজাত ও মধ্যবিত্ত শ্রেণির অনেকেই এ সমিতির সদস্য হন।
রামমোহন রায়ের মূর্তিপূজা বিরোধী প্রচারণায় হিন্দু সমাজ আতঙ্কিত হয়ে উঠে এবং তাঁর বিরুদ্ধে তীব্র সমালোচনা করে।
২. শিক্ষা ক্ষেত্রে সংস্কার :
শিক্ষা ক্ষেত্রে রাজা রামমোহন রায়ের গুরুত্বপূর্ণ অবদান রয়েছে। শিক্ষার প্রয়োজনীয়তা উপলব্ধি করেই তিনি ১৮২৫ সালে 'বেদান্ত কলেজ' এবং ১৯২২ সালে 'এ্যাংলো হিন্দু স্কুল' প্রতিষ্ঠা করেন।
৩. সতীদাহ প্রথা :
সতীদাহ প্রথা বিলোপের ক্ষেত্রে রাজা রামমোহন রায়ের অবদান অপরিসীম। সতীদা প্রথা বিলোপের জন্য রাজা রামমোহন রায় ব্রতী হন।
তাকে সাহায্য করার সমর্থন দেন ভারতের বড়লাট লর্ড উইলিয়াম বেন্টিঙ্ক। ১৮২৯ সালের ৪ ডিসেম্বর সতীদাহ প্রথা নিষিদ্ধ ঘোষণা করা হয়।
৪. ব্রাহ্মসমাজ প্রতিষ্ঠা :
রাজা রামমোহন রায় ১৮২৮ সালে সালের ২০ আগস্ট প্রতিষ্ঠা করেন 'ব্রাহ্মসমাজ' নামে নতুন ধর্মীয় মতবাদ। ব্রাহ্মসমাজ প্রতিষ্ঠার মাধ্যমে ভারতে এক নতুন অধ্যায় সূচিত হয়।
এছাড়াও রাজা রামমোহন রায় সমাজ থেকে কৌলিন্য প্রথা, বাল্য বিবাহ, বহুবিবাহ ইত্যাদি কুপ্রথাগুলো তুলে দেওয়ার জন্য জনমত গড়ে তুলতে থাকেন ।
উপসংহার :
সুতরাং উপরের আলোচনা সাপেক্ষে আমরা বলতে পারি যে, রাজা রামমোহন রায়ের সমাজসংস্কারের সবচেয়ে বেশি প্রতিফলন দেখা যায় শহরের শিক্ষিত শ্রেণির মধ্যে। ধীরে ধীরে মানুষের মধ্যে সচেতনতা বৃদ্ধি পায়।

The areas in which Raja Rammohan Roy contributed are discussed below. Namely: 1. Constituent Assembly: In 1815, Rammohan Roy formed a society named 'Atmiya Sabha' to propagate the message of monotheism. Many of the educated elite and middle class of Calcutta of that era became members of this society. Hindu society was horrified by Rammohan Roy's anti-idolatry campaign and strongly criticized him. 2. Reforms in Education: Raja Rammohan Roy has significant contribution in the field of education. Realizing the need for education, he established 'Vedanta College' in 1825 and 'Anglo Hindu School' in 1922. 3. Ritual of Sati Burning: Raja Ram Mohan Roy's contribution in abolishing sati immolation was immense. Raja Rammohan Roy vowed to abolish satida system. Lord William Bentinck, the great lord of India, supported him. On December 4, 1829, the practice of burning sati was banned. 4. Establishment of Brahmo Samaj: Raja Rammohan Roy established a new religious doctrine called 'Brahma Samaj' on 20 August 1828. A new chapter began in India with the establishment of the Brahmo Samaj. Also, Raja Rammohan Roy started building public opinion to remove the evil practices of Kaulinya, child marriage, polygamy etc. from the society.Conclusion:
